Background of the Study
Polypharmacy, defined as the concurrent use of multiple medications, is a common phenomenon among elderly individuals due to the prevalence of multiple chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease (Mohammed et al., 2024). While polypharmacy is often necessary for managing these conditions, it poses significant risks, including adverse drug reactions, drug interactions, and increased healthcare costs (Suleiman & Tijjani, 2023). In Nigeria, particularly in Jigawa State, the elderly population faces increasing rates of chronic diseases, and polypharmacy has become a widespread issue due to the lack of coordinated care between different healthcare providers (Jibril et al., 2023).
The impact of polypharmacy on the health of elderly patients is multifaceted, affecting not only their physical well-being but also their cognitive function, mental health, and overall quality of life (Yakubu & Hassan, 2023). Older adults are more susceptible to the side effects of medications due to physiological changes that occur with aging, such as altered drug metabolism and renal and hepatic function (Nuhu & Ahmed, 2024). As a result, polypharmacy can lead to a higher incidence of falls, hospitalizations, and even death, which highlights the need for careful medication management in this population.
This study aims to investigate the impact of polypharmacy on the health outcomes of elderly patients in Jigawa State, with a focus on adverse drug reactions, hospitalizations, and overall well-being.
Statement of the Problem
In Jigawa State, polypharmacy is increasingly common among elderly patients due to the rising prevalence of chronic diseases. However, the potential negative effects of polypharmacy, including adverse drug reactions and reduced quality of life, are not well documented in the region. This study seeks to examine how polypharmacy affects the health of elderly patients in Jigawa State, particularly in terms of medication safety, health complications, and overall quality of life.
Objectives of the Study
To assess the prevalence of polypharmacy among elderly patients in Jigawa State.
To evaluate the impact of polypharmacy on the health outcomes of elderly patients, including adverse drug reactions and hospitalizations.
To explore strategies for optimizing medication use and reducing the risks associated with polypharmacy in elderly patients in Jigawa State.
Research Questions
What is the prevalence of polypharmacy among elderly patients in Jigawa State?
How does polypharmacy impact the health outcomes of elderly patients, including adverse drug reactions and hospitalizations?
What strategies can be implemented to optimize medication use and reduce the risks associated with polypharmacy in elderly patients in Jigawa State?
Research Hypotheses
Polypharmacy is prevalent among elderly patients in Jigawa State, contributing to adverse health outcomes.
Elderly patients who experience polypharmacy have a higher incidence of adverse drug reactions and hospitalizations.
Optimizing medication use through coordinated care and regular medication reviews can reduce the negative health impacts of polypharmacy in elderly patients in Jigawa State.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on elderly patients aged 60 and above in Jigawa State, exploring the prevalence of polypharmacy and its impact on health outcomes. The study will use medical records and patient interviews to assess adverse drug reactions, hospitalizations, and overall well-being. Limitations may include difficulty in obtaining complete medication histories and the potential for recall bias in patient-reported data.
Definitions of Terms
Polypharmacy: The concurrent use of multiple medications, often defined as the use of five or more medications by a patient.
Adverse Drug Reactions: Harmful or unintended effects resulting from the use of medications, particularly common in elderly populations due to physiological changes.
Health Outcomes: The results of healthcare interventions or conditions, including physical health, cognitive function, and overall well-being.
